PlayNET Giving Birth to AOL

**VIDEO FIXED**

What we have here is EXTREMELY rare footage of a Commodore 64 (well, an SX-64, you don't see those out in the wild too much) connecting to PlayNET, one of the first public online services right alongside CompuServ, and before AOL and Even QuantumLink (or QLink). This footage appears to have been recorded in 1985.

Actually, speaking of AOL and Qlink, PlayNET is directly related to BOTH! If you are familiar with Qlink, you'll notice the interface looks stunningly similar. Thats because QuantumLink is a direct descendant of PlayNET. I'll edit this later to put in more details, but I do know that PlayNET begat QuantumLink, which begat AOL (America Online).

A bit of a personal aside, my father told me that used to game avidly on this service, mostly playing Backgammon. In fact, ACCORDING TO HIM (ahem)... he either placed first or second place in a PlayNET Backgammon tournament. I can neither confirm nor deny that, other than brief glimpses of memory of him playing it. That is all :)

Yes indeed! Apparently not only is he connected to the internet, but he is doing so with an OLD school 300 baud modem! 

Of course, he is dialing into a terminal, this one being the National Capital Freenet of Ottawa.  Don't know much about it.  But it makes me want to fire up my C64 and give it a shot.

When Does My Life Begin? (C64 remix)

What you're looking at here is an awesome bit of 8-bit digital glory by the group Emotikon.

While the C64 would have been able to do parts of this, this must assuredly not be a whole demo in and of itself (the quality of the voice is a dead giveaway).

Nevertheless, it's a GREAT simulation of the old C64 demoscene, and a great song in general.

With all the hubub about DRM and digital distribution of games, it’s real easy to forget that some platforms have been using the concept for DECADES. One such platform was the Commodore 64, a system very near and dear to my heart. And as such, I’d like to present a game that is similarly dear to me, as it’s one of the first games I ever played, Haunted Hill for the Commodore 64!

Written by George Richardson for Merlin's Associates, its a simple Centipede style game released as a shareware title in 1983. But, as you'll find out, it's more than just that.
