Well, if you like your NES game footage mixed with 90s pop...

... then THIS video is for you! Because that's ALL it is!

Seriously. Gameplay footage and music. Like Street Fighter 2010 and Janet Jackson's Rythm Nation.

It's like YouTube circa 2006, pre-copyright blitz.

It's called the Nintendo Preview Music Jam by Ultra Hot Video. And people BOUGHT this.

In fact, SO many people bought it that many more volumes were produced!

The music includes:
- "Rebel Without a Pause" by Public Enemy
- "The Humpty Dance" by Digital Underground
- Janet Jackson songs like "Nasty", "Rhythm Nation", "When I Think of You", "What Have I Done With You Lately", "All I Give", "Control" and "Escapade",
- "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C+C Music Factory
- "The Boomin' System" - by LL Cool J

Sledge's Gaming Journal - The NintendoAge High Score Contest is Back! This time, Mario Bros.!

So, after a subpar performance in the last contest, I have high hopes in doing much better this time... and with Mario Bros., a game I poured hours into, things are looking up!

Here are the rules, from NA itself:

This week's game is gonna be an arcade classic, Mario Bros. (NOTE: this is NOT Super Mario Bros. This is the arcade Mario Bros.) Here are the rules:

Play on 1 Player Game A
Play until Game Over
To get your score, start a new game and take a picture. Your score will be the high score
If you roll the score, be sure to take your picture right before you roll the score and right after to prove you past 1 million points
No point racking allowed
Highest score wins
GENRE: Arcade

Score: 146870
Phase 19 or 20... sadly I've forgotten. I do think it was 19.

This is the highest score I can remember achieving since I got the game for my 10th birthday. Needless to say, despite the fact that it won't come close to some of the other great players, I'm plenty proud of what I got!

Oh, and by the way, congrats to my colleague DropkickOrange for his standing in the previous contest!

The Legend of Zelda / ゼルだの伝説 - CM Battle!

Welcome to CM Battle! Here, we take a look at both the American and Japanese versions of our favorite games! Today's battle? The Legend of Zelda!

A game which, by the way, I have never beaten (without a Game Genie, anyway), and barely ever played!

Maybe I shouldn't have said that...

SKYNET IS HERE... and it plays NES games.

Well, you gotta start somewhere, right?

This interesting video from suckerpinch shows what happens when an NES is programmed to play itself. Very interesting to see the stages of development as the project went along, and I particularly liked how it even decided to "rage quit" at one point!

More information on the project can be found here: http://tom7.org/mario/mario.pdf

Sledge's Gaming Journal - NintedoAge Weekly High-Score Contest - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!

Sadly, I have not been able to get my scores in on time for NintendoAge's weekly score contests since Rad Racer... but THIS week, I absolutely HAD too. MTPO is MY game, y'all.

For this game, however, the rules were quite specific:

Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests.  This week's game is going to be an NES classic:  Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.  For those who do not own Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, you may use good old Punch-Out with Mr. Dream.  Here are the rules:

  • Fight Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, Don Flamenco (Major Circuit), King Hippo, Piston Honda (World Circuit), and Super Macho Man
  • Password for Don Flamenco and King Hippo: 005 737 5423 (fight King Hippo after defeating Don Flamenco)
  • Password for Piston Honda: 032 730 8442
  • Password for Super Macho Man: 267 853 7538
  • Get the fastest time you can against each boxer
  • The clock stop glitch is forbidden
  • Take your picture on the results screen after each match (make sure to have 6 pictures, one for each boxer)
  • If you opt to take your pictures on the KO screen (where Mario says TKO or KO), your milliseconds time will automatically be 99 for that boxer
  • If you cannot beat one of the boxers, your time for that boxer will be 9:00.  Do this for each boxer you cannot beat (excluding Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream)
  • Add up all of your times to get your overall time
  • Add three minutes to your time for each round you complete (ex. 1:34:00 of round 2 = 4:34:00 overall for that boxer)
  • You may use this time calculator to add up your times: http://www.unitarium.com/time-calculator
  • Fastest overall time wins
  • GENRE: Sports

BONUS POINTS

That's right, this week you guys can earn some bonus points on the leaderboard.  This is entirely optional and you do not have to submit the bonus score if you do not want to.  Here's what to do:

  • Fight Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream
  • Password for Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream: 007 373 5963
  • If you beat Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream this week, you will earn 1 bonus point on the weekly leaderboard and Sports genre leaderboard (be quick with your picture after he is defeated)
  • Whoever beats Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream the fastest this week will earn 3 bonus points on the weekly leaderboard and Sports genre leaderboard

The contest ends Sunday, 5/12/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will not be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

So here's how I did:

Glass Joe

Von Kaiser

Don Flamenco (Major)

King Hippo

Piston Honda (World)

So,my total time ended up being 21:38.23 after NOT being able to beat Super Macho Man.  Goddamn, there's something about his timing that is just different.

I guess we'll see where that lands me in the leaderboards.

Nintendo's Monopoly?

Today, such a thing, with Microsoft and Sony competing very heavily would be unthinkable.

However, in the late 80's and early 90's, it was a very logical conclusion. In fact, we would have never considered it any other way during this time.

The Console Wars -- Christmas 1990

Just to show you youngins just how hot the console wars got, look no further than this vintage news report from Good Morning America from 1990 to tell you.

Nintendo versus Sega. NES versus the Genesis.

And not to mention some very interesting market insights of the time... such as Nintendo console sales slowing because EVERYONE ALREADY HAS ONE.

Just watch.

Nintendo Interactive Retail Store Displays

I also love stuff like this... the stuff we were never actually meant to see!

Here is a guide to those interactive Nintendo displays so prominent in such department stores such as Sears, Bradleys and K-Marts in the early 90's!

Sledge's Gaming Journal - NA Weekly Video Game Contest - Rad Racer!

As mentioned earlier, I'm taking part in the NintendoAge Forums Weekly Video Game Contest, with this week's contest being Rad Racer.

As mentioned in a previous post, I had photographed my "high" score, but the photo was ineligible due to the screen being cut off. Not anymore!

Not only did I get a much better quality picture, but I also improved on my score!
Sure it's not terribly impressive, but it's mine and dang it I worked for it!

Sledge's Gaming Journal - Joining a Video Game Score Contest...

*UPDATE: This pic may be invalid as it does not show the whole screen. looks like I'm going to have to try again. :( *

So I recently decided to stop lurking and join the NintendoAge forums.

My main impetus? This:

They're running a weekly high score contest! I don't know about you, but I love the idea!

So here is my first entry... Rad Racer!

And... I'm not all that great at it.

Hey, I barely ever gave it any play back in the day.

But that's fine... because some friends and I went at it HARDCORE last night. SIX hours of Rad Racer practice.

The above is my first entry, but I will keep trying to improve. 頑張ります!
